PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT Newsletter Vol. 1, No. 1 January 2021 Greetings! We are pleased to present to you the first quarterly issue of the new PIASA Newsletter. At a time when we are unable to network with each other in person, it’s important to provide our members and friends an opportunity to keep abreast of important events in the life of the Institute and happenings within the Polish studies community. In it you will find news about conferences, a members’ forum, our most recent award recipients, scholarship and fellowship opportunities, recently published books, the achievements of fellow members and much more. What a year it has been! The outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic led to the temporary closure of our office in New York and the cancellation of our conference planned for Chicago in June. The latter was particularly regrettable because of the quality of the panel and paper submissions we had received before that decision was made. Nonetheless, we have pressed ahead with planning for a June 2021 world congress in Białystok, in expanding our membership, in putting out calls for nominations for the 2020 awards and in preserving and digitizing of our archives. We are especially proud of the growing reputation and readership of our journal, The Polish Review, thanks to the efforts of its editorial team.We trust that the new year will be better than the last for the entire Polish studies community. On behalf of PIASA’s Board of Directors, I wish you all the best for Wszystkiego najlepszego! ― Robert Blobaum, PIASA President

PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT The Polish Institute of Arts & Sciences of America is pleased to invite proposals for its 8th World Congress to be held at the University of Białystok, Poland, June 10-13, 2021 Proposals are solicited for complete sessions or individual papers in any of the disciplines in the liberal arts, sciences, or business/economics. The general theme of the conference is “Borderlands (Pogranicza)”, for which Białystok, a city on Poland’s present-day eastern frontier adjacent to Poland’s historic borderlands (kresy), with its own distinctive multicultural past, is a most appropriate setting. Therefore, we particularly welcome panel and paper proposals which address the multiethnic and contested nature of borderlands, realms where the mixing and unmixing of populations and cultures have occurred. They have been zones of peaceful coexistence and brutalizing violence. At the same time, borderlands have also been places of national indifference and identity-formation. The borderland region known as the kresy has long inspired outstanding literary works and other cultural products, both national and transnational. What is the relevance of borderlands today? For example, is Europe—so recently conceived and experienced as a zone without internal borders—being re-territorialized? These are but some ideas of what may be discussed; however, papers do not necessarily have to address the main conference theme. Since we value comparative sessions that place the Polish and East Central European experience in context, papers need not focus specifically on Poland or Polish themes. Similarly, sessions including presenters from more than one country are encouraged. Each session is scheduled for 90 minutes to accommodate three papers or about 20 minutes per paper, with suitable time left for discussion. The conference language is English. All conference rooms will be equipped with AV for PowerPoint presentations. Presenters are invited to submit their conference papers to be considered for possible publication in The Polish Review after the conference. To submit a paper or complete session, please send the name, e-mail address, institutional affiliation, tentative paper title and brief one-paragraph abstract for each presenter to program chair Patrice Dabrowski at pmd639[at]g.harvard.edu. The deadline for proposals is March 15, though earlier submissions are welcome since capacity is limited. All participants are expected to pay the conference registration fee of $80, discounted to $40 for students. PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT Polish Studies conference Chicago, June 12-14, 2020 Call for Papers for a joint Polish Studies conference Chicago, June 12-14, 2020 The Polish Institute of Arts & Sciences of America and the Polish Studies Association are pleased to invite proposals for a joint conference to be held at the University of Illinois at Chicago.Proposals are solicited for complete sessions or individual papers in any of the disciplines in the liberal arts, sciences, or business/economics. The general theme of the conference is “Migrations,” for which Chicago, the destination of generations of Polish and other migrants from East-Central Europe, is a most appropriate setting. Therefore, we particularly welcome panel and paper proposals which discuss the determinants, processes, and outcomes of human migration in all of its manifestations and from various disciplinary perspectives, including the migration of ideas and material culture. However, papers do not necessarily have to address the conference theme. Since we value comparative sessions that place the Polish and East Central European experience in context, papers need not focus specifically on Poland or the Polish diaspora but could revolve around a central theme of a panel. Presenters are invited to submit their conference papers to be considered for possible publication in The Polish Review subsequent to the conference. To submit a paper or complete session, please send the name, e-mail address, institutional affiliation, tentative paper title and brief one-paragraph abstract for each presenter to program chair Patrice Dabrowski at . The deadline for proposals is February 1, though earlier submissions are welcome since capacity is limited.
