PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS current events CONTACT PIASA 9th World Congress Collegium Civitas, June 7 – 9, 2024 Warsaw, Poland organized under the Honorary Patronage of the Minister of Science Program Click here The Polish Institute of Arts & Sciences of America (PIASA) is pleased to invite proposals for its 9 th World Congress, which will be hosted by Collegium Civitas in Warsaw’s Palace of Culture and Science from June 7-9, 2024. Proposals are solicited for complete in-person sessions or individual papers in any of the disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, or business/economics. The general theme of the conference is “Poland in the World,” for which Warsaw, the Polish capital and major European financial, commercial, political, and cultural center is a most appropriate setting. At the same time, Collegium Civitas, a non-public higher education institution with an international student body and strong academic traditions in diplomacy, international relations, sociology, media, and security studies, is well positioned to host the congress at its location in the iconic Palace of Culture in Warsaw’s city center. The Congress also coincides with various anniversaries of international significance, the 35 th anniversary of Poland’s political transformation, the 25 th anniversary of Poland’s accession to NATO, and the 20 th anniversary of Poland’s joining the European Union. Therefore, we particularly welcome panel and paper proposals which address the continental and global interactions that have affected Poland and the multinational peoples that have inhabited its various territories over time, their cultural impacts, and Poland’s current and past roles in world affairs. In line with the international emphasis of the Congress, sessions including presenters from more than one country are also encouraged. Since we value comparative sessions that place the Polish and East Central European experience in context, papers need not focus specifically on Poland or Polish themes. Finally, papers do not necessarily have to address the main conference theme and are welcome for consideration in separate and cohesive panels. Each session is scheduled for 90 minutes to accommodate three papers or about 20 minutes per paper, with suitable time left for discussion. As the conference language is English, all panel and paper submissions are expected to be in that language. All conference rooms will be equipped with AV for PowerPoint presentations. Presenters are invited to submit their final conference papers to be considered for possible publication in The Polish Review after the conference. All participants are encouraged to pay the conference pre-registration fee of $100, discounted to $50 for students, by May 10, 2024, as the conference fees will increase after that date. The Friday morning plenary session will be welcomed by the mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, and the plenary keynote address will be delivered by Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Bartoszewski. The Saturday evening awards banquet will be held at 6:30 PM (admission is $75) at the recently opened Museum of Polish History at the Warsaw Citadel. Dr. Janusz Onyszkiewicz, Solidarity spokesperson in the 1980s, Minister of Defense in two Polish cabinets, and former Vice President of the European Parliament, will deliver the banquet keynote address. Thursday, June 6 2:00-6:00 Praga Tour Price: 40 USD per participant Registration for tour closes on May 15 and any additional participants afterwards will be added subject to seat availability Praga is a historic Warsaw district located on the right bank of the Vistula River. During the tour, we will see some of the finest examples of pre-war architecture, including traces of its Jewish heritage, with one example being the Bergson Educational Establishment of the Warsaw Jewish Community (built in 1911-1914, one of the best-preserved Jewish buildings in Warsaw). We will stop at Koneser – the historic vodka factory, today one of Warsaw’s entertainment centers, located in a unique urban setting. We will see small, picturesque chapels and the Basilica at Kawęczyńska Street. On the way, we will also see Warsaw’s longest block of flats. We will walk through the old Różycki’s Baazar and venture into the streets where the famous movie “The Pianist” was shot. Praga is known for its shabby reputation, but do not worry! Its bad reputation largely belongs to the past. The district is changing and known for its bohemian vibe, world-class street art (which we will look at during our Praga tour), charming cafes and lively bars, and local artists who live and work in Praga. The British newspaper The Independent even ranked Praga as one of Europe’s ten “coolest and most promising” neighborhoods. Our experienced guide will show you the most beautiful and interesting places full of history. Visiting Praga is like traveling in time! The tour is 4 hours long, with pickup at 2 PM at the Palace of Culture and Science. PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS current events CONTACT The Short Story in a Polish Context: Classic Short Fiction from the Seventeenth to Twentieth Centuries Edited and with Commentary by Oscar E. Swan An anthology that shows how the short-fiction genre evolved in Poland, The Short Story in a Polish Context contains selections belonging to the Polish short-story canon throughout the ages. A variety of Poland’s greatest and best-known authors and interesting themes have been chosen. Several of the stories appear here in English for the first time in Oscar Swan’s masterful translations; others have been translated by other well-known literary translators of Polish. Prof. Swan’s commentaries on the stories give the reader historical context as well as providing insight into linguistic and cultural aspects that might otherwise elude the non-Polish-speaking reader. Appropriate for use as a text in a Polish literature-in-translation course, the book can also serve as a supplementary text for courses on Central European culture or simply as an introduction to Polish culture for the general reader. Advance Praise for The Short Story in a Polish Context “The selection of the short stories is wide-ranging historically and thematically. In this way, The Short Story in a Polish Context presents a personal, yet fairly exhaustive, account of the Polish short-story tradition through the centuries.” —Agnieszka Jezyk, University of Washington “The editor has my congratulations for making an important element of Polish cultural production—the short tale and its various sub-genres—accessible to students of Polish literature and language and to general readers.” —George Gasyna, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign About the Editor Oscar E. Swan is professor of Slavic languages and literature at the University of Pittsburgh, where he has been teaching since 1974. He specializes in Polish language, literature, and culture as well as Polish cinema. PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS current events CONTACT Newsletter Vol. 4, No. 2 April 2024 Nearly six years ago, you entrusted me with the helm of this distinguished organization and my second term is rapidly approaching its end. As this will be my last column in this space, it comes with mixed emotions and many reflections on what has transpired since 2018. Truth be told, those six years began with some trepidation. Yes, I had been a longstanding member of PIASA, had published in The Polish Review, had participated in several of its conferences, and served as a board member for three years. I also came with some administrative experience at my university, but quickly discovered that chairing a department and leading a national academic and cultural institute were two different matters. My first year was largely spent learning on the job under the guidance of interim president Professor Paul Knoll, who had also served for many years as PIASA’s vice president, and Executive Director Bozena Leven. Things started on a promising note, and our 2019 World Congress in Gdańsk proved an unmitigated success, leading to new applications for membership after years of stagnation. That early momentum was then challenged by the COVID pandemic, the cancellation of conferences in Chicago in 2020 and Białystok in 2021, and the suspension of on-site events at our New York office. We had to find new means to stay connected to our membership and for our members to remain connected with each other. One was this Newsletter, the brainchild of Prof. James Pula. The other was a series of webinars, organized with the help of Prof. Anna Müller, PIASA’s incoming president. We also made good use of our assets to emerge from the pandemic a stronger and more diverse organization. The Polish Review, edited early on by Prof. Neal Pease and then by Prof. Halina Filipowicz, has been transformed into the leading English-language multidisciplinary Polish studies journal with a genuinely global reach and a destination for cutting-edge scholarship. Our awards, which back in 2018 were irregularly given, are now well funded, increasingly competitive, and have increased from the original five to nine. Consequently, the increase in membership we experienced before the pandemic has accelerated over the last three years. Finally, we have renewed our annual meetings, first in Białystok in 2022, just months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and in New Britain in 2023. In both instances, as well as for the forthcoming World Congress in Warsaw, the amazing organizational talents of Patrice Dabrowski have proved invaluable. Every indication is that the Warsaw Congress will rival that of Gdańsk, both in terms of numbers and in the quality of speakers and panels. In July, you will “Meet the New President” in this space, and I trust that you will support Anna Müller in her challenging new role. PIASA’s future is a bright one, and while I will be stepping aside as president, I hope to remain on the Board of Directors to assist in the transition, just as I was assisted back in 2018. I leave you with just two words of appreciation: “Thank you!” ― Robert Blobaum, PIASA President
PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS current events CONTACT 2024 PIASA Science Awards presented to Eminent Polish-American Scientists Prof. Tomasz Wierzbicki (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Prof. Alex Wlodawer (Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute, Frederick, MD, USA) Friday, April 5, 2024, 6:00 PM The Kosciuszko Foundation 15 E 65th Street, New York, NY 10065 The Kosciuszko Foundation and The Polish Institute of Arts & Sciences of America (PIASA) cordially invite you to the joint event honoring distinguished Polish-American scientists Prof. Tomasz Wierzbicki of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Prof. Alex Wlodawer of the Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute, Frederick, MD, USA. The program will feature a presentation of the PIASA’s Tadeusz Sendzimir and Casimir Funk Awards to the respective scientists and a short lecture delivered by each laureate. A light reception will follow the presentations. The event is presented as part of the KF Collegium of Eminent Scientists Lecture Series. It is meant for a general audience, free and open to the public. Space is limited, and registration is required. Prof. Tomasz Wierzbicki: “Aluminum as Main Structural Material on Earth and in Space” Dr. Tomasz Wierzbicki is a distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His extensive contributions in the fields of mechanical stability and crashworthiness, spanning automotive, shipbuilding, battery, aluminum, and other industries, have earned him global recognition. Notably, his analyses of the Challenger Space Shuttle breakup, the Exxon Valdez spill, and the World Trade Center aircraft impact and collapse reconstruction have significantly advanced our understanding in these areas. During his talk at the PIASA Award Ceremony, Dr. Wierzbicki will delve into the ubiquitous use of aluminum in our everyday lives, from cars to buildings. He will also explore the future of aluminum, particularly its potential as the primary building material for infrastructure on Mars, a topic of increasing relevance in our rapidly evolving world. Prof. Alexander Wlodawer: “What can structural biology do for human health and the environment.” Methods employed in the field of structural biology in general, and in the investigation of three-dimensional protein structures in particular, have undergone tremendous changes in the last half-century. Detailed knowledge of such structures is the key to the development of drugs, with the treatment of AIDS providing a textbook example of the successful use of structural information for that purpose. The development of enzymes that can be used to remediate plastic pollution provides another example. Experimental methods used to study protein structures include X-ray and neutron crystallography, NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), and, more recently, cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Recent developments of artificial intelligence-based computational approaches to structure prediction, such as AlphaFold, have been truly revolutionary. During his lecture, Prof. Wlodawer will illustrate these subjects with examples of work from his laboratory, as well as by other scientists. Dr. Alexander Wlodawer received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1974. After two years as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, he joined the National Bureau of Standards in 1976 and then moved to the National Cancer Institute in 1978. Until 2020, he was Chief of the Macromolecular Crystallography Laboratory and now is Senior Investigator. Some of the areas of his interest are directly involved in elucidating structural features of molecules that could explain their importance to understanding cancer, AIDS, and COVID-19, but he is also active in the development of methods for protein crystallography. Dr. Wlodawer is a coauthor of 425 publications and serves on the editorial boards of several journals. He was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Technical University of Lodz, Poland, is an elected Foreign Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, a recipient of the NCI Mentor of Merit Award and of the Heyrovsky Honorary Medal (Czech Academy of Sciences). In 2015, he received the American Association for the Advancement of Science – Foundation for Polish Science Award for Collaborative Research (with Prof. Mariusz Jaskolski).
