Music by Saxophonist Krzysztof MedynaExhibition is organized in partership by the Gallery Roi Dore and PIASA and co-sponsored by the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in New York. Jan Lebenstein (1930 – 1999), is one of the great Polish contemporary artists. His talent was recognized early in his career. In 1955 shortly after his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw he was awarded a jury prize for his landscape drawings. In 1959 he won the restigious Grand Prize of Paris at the First International Biennale of Young Artists. The artist subsequently moved to Paris. Jan Lebenstein inspiration derived from his fascination with the Bible and the mythologies of the ancient civilizations of Assyria, Babylon, Greece and Egypt. in the years 1960 to 1965 he created strange creatures in his Carnet Intimes series and “prehistoric” animals in his Creatures Abominable series. From 1966 to 1974 he produced works (Bestiaria series) in which his mythological scenes were depicted in bars, metros and other common sites of modern cities. Lebenstein also applied his talents to other art forms. He illustrated Orwell’s Animal Farm, as well as The Book of Job and The Apocalypse. He designed the stained glass windows for the Centre de Dialogue in Paris. Among Jan Lebenstein’s many honors and awards for his body of work are the Jurzykowski Foundation Prize (1976), the Jan Cybis prize (1987) and the Great Cross and Star of the Order of the Restoration of Poland (1998). In the summer of 2014 Paris Gallery Roi Dore (www.roidore.com) organized an exhibition of the artist’s work on paper, “JAN LEBENSTEIN. IN MEMORIAM” (1930-1999). The artist’s works from that exhibition were brought to New York PIASA Gallery by the Gallery Roi Dore. The current exhibition is organized by The Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America in partnership with the Gallery Roi Dore and with cosponsorship of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in New York. PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT Group Show: Jadwiga Iwanska, Maria Kostszewska Baron, Bojana H Leznicki, Slawomir Iwanski, Malgorzata Pasek This show presents an eclectic selection of small art works by 6 artists working in fiber, photography, ceramics and graphics. Each is a recognized specialist in his or her field. Jadwiga Iwanska graduated from the Academy of Fine Art in Lodz, Poland in textiles and Interior design. She is a fiber artist who works with fabrics to create textured landscapes. Her work can be found in private and public collections. Maria Kostszewska Baron graduated from the Academy of Fine Art in Lodz, Poland. She works in ceramics and has used her art in puppet design and also works as a costume designer for TV in Poland. Bojana H Leznicki graduated from the Academy of Fine Art in Lodz, Poland. She works as a fiber artist and textile conservator, and teaches the “Fiber class” at Touro College in NYC. Her work is small intimate views of her surrounding world enhanced with embroidery. Slawomir Iwanski is known as a prominent international graphic artist. He is professor of Graphic Design at The Academy of Fine Art in Lodz, Poland. His posters have been shown in many major shows in many countries. Malgorzata Pasek graduated from the Polytechnic School of Engineering in Bialystok, Poland. She has worked artistically in many fields of engineering as well as jewelry and interior design. However her passion is for silent underwater art photography. RSVP Photo credit: poland.us Janusz Kapusta is a Polish artist interested in Mathematics and Philosophy. His work ranges from small graphics, posters, magazine illustrations, graphic design and book illustrations, to set designs and painting. He is a graduate of the high school of Fine Arts in Poznan and the Department of Architecture at the Warsaw Polytechnic. He pursued further studies in the history of philosophy at the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw and in 2010 he earned a Ph.D. at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. The artist has resided in New York City since 1981. (www.kapusta.com).In 1985 Janusz Kapusta discovered a new geometrical shape, an eleven faced polyhedron that he named the K-dron (www.k-dron.com). He has exploited the use of the K-dron in many of his works and has presented many K-dron exhibitions (e.g., Museum of Modern Art in Lodz, Poland). In 2000, the artist discovered new and previously unknown principles of the “golden proportion” or the “golden rule” the mathematical concept that fascinated Western intellectuals of diverse interests (including Euclid, Leonardo Da Vinci and Johannes Kepler) for at least 2,400 years, and he has presented them at mathematical conferences and in mathematical periodicals. Mr. Kapusta has applied his talents in diverse areas of art. He created set designs for operas e.g., Robert Wilson Opera “The Black Rider” and for “Carmen” at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw. He has authored three books: “Almost Everybody” (1985), “Janusz Kapusta in the New York Times” (1995), a book recognized as the most beautiful art album published in Poland in that year, “K-dron. Opatentowana nieskonczoność” or “K-dron. Patented Infinity“(1995). He has designed illustrations for “The Captive Mind“, a book by Nobel laureate Czeslaw Milosz.His drawings have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, Nature and other publications. The artist’s works can be found in the collections of many museums and galleries around the world, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Museum of Modern Art in Lodz, Poland and the IBM Collection. He has presented his art at numerous museums in many individual and group exhibitions. PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT Exhibition of Posters by Rafał Olbiński Rafal Olbinski’s posters are an excellent synthesis of surrealistic mood and from the other side symbolism, characteristic to the Polish school of poster design. He has received more than 100 awards for his work, including Gold and Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators and ArtDirectors Club of New York. In 1994 he was awarded the International Oscar for the World’s Most Memorable Poster, “Prix Savignac 1994” in Paris. In 1995 his poster was chosen as the official New York City Capital of the World Poster in an invitational competition, by a jury led by Mayor Rudolph Guliani. Following year he won the award for the best painting in the annual exhibition of the Society of Illustrators. Rafal Olbinski was born in city of Kielce in Poland. He graduated from Architectural Department of Warsaw Polytechnic School. In 1981 he emigrated to the US, where he soon established himself as a prominent painter, illustrator and designer. Since 1985 he’s been a professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York. PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT Exhibition of Paintings: “ECHOES OF BRAZIL” by Magdalena Zawadzka Professional Biography Magdalena Zawadzka studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk. After completing her studies she moved to Warsaw, where she concentrated on painting decorative textiles. Her next stop was Rome, where she joined the group of artists Cento Pittori a via Margutta. While in Rome she developed a “naïve” style of painting, a style that she adopted as her own in depicting her favorite subjects – nature scenes featuring animals, birds and occasionally people. Her next and last stop in Italy was Genoa.In 1975 she moved to Sao Paolo, Brazil where her painting style evolved to reflect the exotic nature of Brazilian landscapes. In 1997 she moved to New York City and she has applied her unique style to colorful portrayals of the city. She continues to paint, exhibit and participate in the life of the Polish artistic community.Magdalena Zawadzka has exhibited her paintings in numerous solo and group exhibitions in: USA, Brazil, Italy, Poland, France, Canada, Denmark and Japan. The images in this collection have never been presented or published. Professional Biography Jan Hausbrandt has spent over 40 years pursuing his passion, the art of photography. Uninterested in staged photographs and advertising, he describes his work as an effort to “uncover my surroundings and find my place among them”. Using light in its various forms he has sought to “focus on the impression of each photo rather that its reality.” Hausbrandt prefers black and white images in documentary photography and photojournalism. His creative work utilizes both color and black and white images.Born in Warsaw he started his professional career in 1972 as a photojournalist for Polish Agency Interpress. He later worked as a photographer for the popular Polish publication, Music Magazine. During this period his talents were also utilized by the British agency, Camera Press, and the Hamburg based German agency, Focus. In the early 1980’s, during Poland’s difficult and turbulent Martial Law his photos documented and unveiled the stark realities of everyday life during this dark period of Polish history.Since moving to the USA in 1985 he has worked as a freelance photographer for various agencies, such as Black Star, and most recently for a Japanese agency, Pan Asia. His photographs have appeared in magazines and newspapers (such as Newsweek, US News and World Report, the Boston Globe and the Los Angeles Times). His stock photos are on file at the Picture Press Agency in Hamburg, Germany and at the East News Agency in Warsaw, Poland. Jan A. PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT Exhibition of Art Works: “Faces – sketches from dreams” by Janusz Skowron Janusz Skowron was born in Kolbuszowa, Poland (1958). He studied Fine Arts at the University of UMCS in Lublin and received a Masters Degree in Lithography in 1983. Since 1989 Mr. Skowron has been living and working in New York City. Mr. Skowron is a member of the international multimedia art group “Emotionalism”, “The Polish Artists Association”, PIASA and the “New Century Artists Gallery” (NYC). He is the co-founder of the “KONT Gallery” (1978) and the “SHTOOKA Gallery” (2006). Artist is an organizer and participant in international xhibits including “Entropy of Art” (2008) and “Transformations- works on paper” (2011-2013). In his artwork he moves easily between figurative and more abstract themes. His sensibility is constantly in flux between inner and outer realities that are realized in his expression of exquisite and evocative psychological tension. His art screams, shouts and whispers feelings and moods of the moment, ranging from anger, pain, and ecstasy to serenity, joy and intellectual reflection. Each work is done in one session; he never returns to the mood of moment. “It wouldn’t be genuine, you cannot feel exact emotions twice.” Mr. Skowron has exhibited his works at the PIASA Gallery and has participated in more than two hundred exhibitions, displaying his works in Poland, Hungary, U.S.A., South Korea, China, France, Denmark, Ukraine and Germany. His broad range of skills includes painting, drawing, photography and graphic arts. Since 2001 his illustrations have been published by the New York magazine “Kurier Plus”. Mr. Skowron has served as the curator of several exhibitions, and he is a tireless promoter of Polish Art in America.
