PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT The Memory of March 1968 in Poland – Prof. Natalia Aleksiun lecture at PIASA The Polish Institute of Arts & Sciences of America would like to invite you to a lecture by Professor Natalia Aleksiun, PhD Warsaw University and NYU “The Memory of March 1968 in Poland” March 1, 2018 at 6:30pm Natalia Aleksiun is Associate Professor of Modern Jewish History at Touro College, Graduate School of Jewish Studies, New York. She studied East European and Jewish history in Poland, where she received her first doctoral degree at Warsaw University, as well as Oxford, Jerusalem and New York, where she received her second doctoral degree at NYU. Among several prestigious fellowships, she was a fellow at the Institute of Contemporary History in Munich, Germany; Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies, University of Pennsylvania, and Senior Fellow at Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies, Vienna, a Yad Hanadiv Postdoctoral Fellow in Israel and Pearl Resnick Postdoctoral Fellow, The Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, USHMM, Washington D.C., and the Institute for Contemporary History in Munich. She published a monograph titled Where to? The Zionist Movement in Poland, 1944-1950, and numerous articles in Yad Vashem Studies, Polish Review, Dapim, East European Jewish Affairs, Studies in Contemporary Jewry, Polin, Gal Ed, East European Societies and Politics, Nashim and German History. She coedited the twentieth volume of Polin, devoted to the memory of the Holocaust and the 29th volume titled Writing Jewish History in Eastern Europe. Her book titled “Conscious History: Polish Jewish Historians before the Holocaust” will be published with Littman in 2018. She arrived in the United States in 1836 and began 32 years devoted the woman’s suffrage movement. Armed with magnificent oratory, superb debating skills and a keen mind she traveled throughout the country in an unceasing effort to gain the vote for women. She fought slavery advocates, anti-suffrage ministers, senators and congressman and anyone else who stood in the way of human rights. Ernestine Rose’s life is a unique testimony to the cause of freedom. She lived her life as she wrote in a letter to Susan B. More than 25,000 people were infected and more than 11,000 people died from this deadly infectious viral disease for which no antiviral drugs or vaccines are currently approved. Health care workers from around the world conver gedin the West African epicenter of the outbreak, to do everything and anything possible to care for the sick and dying, and to stop the of spread of disease. At the same time, national regulatory authorities, health policy‐makers, and vaccine manufacturers scrambled to develop a vaccine that might be effective in preventing individuals from contracting the infection. This talk describes the journey to ward development of one very promising vaccine candidate, which, based on early results from a clinical study in Guinea, was shown to be 100% effective. Następnie przez dwa lata mieszkał w Berlinie Zachodnim, a w połowie lat osiemdziesiątych wyemigrował do Nowego Jorku. Tu pracował w oddziale Wolnej Europy, apóźniej został Dyrektorem Instytutu Piłsudskiego. Przez dalsze ponad 20 lat pracował w redakcji nowojorskiego “Nowego Dziennika”. Równolegle wykładał filozofię i socjologię w Mercy College, gdzie pracuje do dzisiaj. Wykłada także w Hunter College w Nowym Jorku, gdzie opiekuje się polskim programem – literatura, język, tłumaczenia. Czesław Karkowski jest autorem około 10 książek – pierwsza, opublikowana w Polsce, jest poświęcona pisarstwu Brunona Schulza. Jego ostatnia książką, opublikowaną w Nowym Jorku, jest „Iliada współczesna” – rozważania na temat starogreckiego poematu Homera. Przetłumaczył też parę książek, oraz opublikował setki artykułów, w tym także w czasopismach naukowych, oraz w książkowych pracach zbiorowych. PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT Bolesław Leśmian, Marvellations An Evening of Poetry and Art: “Marvellations”.With Marian Polak-Chlabicz, translator of Bolesław Leśmian poetry,Janusz Skowron, illustrator of books of poetry and Tadeusz Turkowski, actor.Musical accompaniment by saxophonist Krzysztof Medyna. Marian Polak ­Chlabicz is a journa list, translator, writer and poet living in New York. He regularly contributes to the Nowy Dziennik, Polish Daily News, the website www.nowyjorker.com and many other media. He recently translated into English two volumes of poetry by the famous Polish poet Bolesław Leśmian: 33 of the Most Beautiful Love Poems (2011) and Marvellations (2014). He also translated (2012) poems of Pablo Neruda’s Veinte Poemas de Amor y una Canción Desesperada into Polish. Currently, he continues to translate Leśmian’s poems and works on a few other literary projects. Janusz Skowron is a painter, a graphic artist and a photographer. He has been living in New York for many years where he tirelessly promotes Polish art. He works closely with the Art Group “Emotionalists”. His broad experience includes participation in more than 200 individual and group exhibits. Tadeusz Turkowski has performed with the well‐known Theatre “Hybrydy’ in Warsaw. He is recognized by the New York area Polish community for his excellent interpretations of Polish poetry.
