The Witching Woods – SHOW

PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS current events WEBINARS CONTACT The Witching Woods SHOW curated by Joanna M. Wezyk The Witching Woods explores the myths and legends surrounding the summer solstice. Drawing on traditions from St. John’s Eve (Noc Świętojańska), the exhibition presents ritual as a transformative and healing process. Through the worship of fire and water, and symbols like the mythical fern flower, the works reflect on purity both individually and collectively. Loosely inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the exhibition blends folklore, fairy tales, and nature to depict the magic of the summer solstice. Ten artists present paintings, drawings, digital works, and sculptures that capture glimpses of the dreamlike, enchanting night. PROJECT EAGLE – book talk with John S. Micgiel

PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS current events WEBINARS CONTACT PROJECT EAGLE: The Top Secret OSS Operation That Sent Polish Spies Behind Enemy Lines During World War 2 Author’s Evening And Book Signing After the Battle of the Bulge—which had begun with a German attack that American intelligence failed to anticipate—the Office of Strategic Service (OSS), forerunner of the CIA, revamped its intelligence operations in Europe. Confronted with staff shortages and needing native language speakers, the OSS decided to enlist the cooperation of volunteers from occupied countries for intelligence-gathering operations. As part of Project Eagle, Polish soldiers were recruited and trained to go behind the lines of the Third Reich. Project Eagle tells this fascinating World War II story of intelligence and espionage that until now has been hidden away in the archives of the OSS.The OSS had worked with Polish exiles throughout the war, but Project Eagle would mark a new and dramatic chapter in their cooperation. In early 1945, American intelligence recruited thirty-two Poles—a unique group of men who had been forcibly conscripted into the German Wehrmacht, were captured in France and Italy, and were pulled from Allied prisoner of war camps. They were then trained in intelligence gathering as well as espionage to assist the Allies in their invasion of Germany. Not long after—in March 1945—they parachuted behind enemy lines, equipped only with falsified documents and radios. For six weeks, up until Germany’s surrender, the Polish spy teams roved Germany, assisting ground commanders and providing counterintelligence assistance. About this author John S. Forgotten Polish Oscar Winners by Prof. Andrzej Krakowski

PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS current events CONTACT PIASA Lecture Forgotten Polish Oscar Winners Event Details Date: September 26, 2024 Time: 7:00 PM Location: 208 E 30th St. New York, NY 10016 Professor ANDRZEJ KRAKOWSKI the noted filmmaker and CCNY professor, is the recipient of the Outstanding Pole Abroad award, one of Poland’s top honors. City College of New York Professor of Film and Digital Media Andrzej Krakowski has received many accolades over his nearly six decade career. The latest is recognition as an Outstanding Pole Abroad, one of Poland’s most prestigious non-governmental awards. The world-famous director was given the honor by the Poland Now Foundation in recognition for his research in film history highlighting the Polish roots of the American film industry. The ceremony took place at the Consulate of Republic of Poland in New York.  Recently Krakowski has also been elected to the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Development of the Polish National Film School (PWSFTviT) in Lodz. Among the past directors of the Foundation, which was created in 1970 and has the leading role in the future direction of the School’s expansion, are such great directors as Andrzej Wajda and Wojciech Jerzy Has, among others.  Krakowski’s election was “recognition for your competence and professional achievements, as well as your involvement in the activities of the Polish National Film School,” said Dr. Hab Milenia Fiedler, the School’s director.  A PWSFTviT alumnus, Krakowski was stripped of his Polish citizenship and barred from returning to the country for alleged anti-government activities after accepting an American film scholarship in 1968. He returned to his native land after the fall of communism and earned his Ph.D. from PWSFTviT, considered one of the top five film schools in the world, in 2014. “I’m very humbled by this honor. To the best of my knowledge, I will be the first board member residing abroad and definitely the first CUNY faculty member,” said Krakowski. “I must admit that I find it amazing that the country that expelled me in 1968 now embraces me in such a warm way.”   Source: CUNY Other News Annual Meeting 2025 – NYC Columbia University Annual Meeting 2025 – NYC Columbia University • September 29, 2024 Newsletter Vol. 4, No. 4 October 2024 Newsletter Vol. 4, No. 4 October 2024 • September 27, 2024 Donation of the “Tatrzański Orzeł/The Tatra Eagle” Donation of the “Tatrzański Orzeł/The Tatra Eagle” • September 21, 2024 Forgotten Polish Oscar Winners by Prof. Andrzej Krakowski Forgotten Polish Oscar Winners by Prof. Andrzej Krakowski • September 16, 2024 1 2 3 … 43 Next » Navigation Home About Us membership conferences Awards Publications Archives Library Contact Contact Us 208 East 30th St. New York, NY 10016 +1 (212) 686-4164piasany@gmail.com DONATION Get Connected Facebook-f Instagram Youtube Envelope Co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland
