In memory of Maciej Patkowski

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Maciej Patkowski, a writer, and long-time PIASA member, passed away on January 17 in Lake Ronkonkoma, Long Island.

The author of many novels, stage plays and film scripts, he was a member of the Union of Polish Writers Abroad (based in London)  the Polish Writers’ Association (based in Warsaw), and the recipient of many literary awards.

He actively participated in the cultural and literary life of New York’s  Polish community and co-organized many important events. He also played a key role in an exhibition dedicated to Jan Lechoń at PIASA’s headquarters on the 100th anniversary of the poet’s birth in 1999, the unveiling ceremony of the memorial plaque to Jan Lechoń in Doylestown on the 50th anniversary of the poet’s death in 2006, and special academic sessions during PIASA Annual Meetings.

He also collaborated in various capacities with the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York, The Józef Piłsudski Institute in America and the Polish Museum in Chicago. The Polish community in America and PIASA have lost not only a distinguished member, but also a devoted friend.
