Born in Łowicz, Poland in 1958, Jerzy Jarniewicz studied English language and literature and philosophy at the University of Łódź and at Oxford University. He was a member of the editorial board of the influential literary monthly “Literatura na Świecie” (“Literature in the World”). He is the author of sixteen volumes of poetry, over a dozen books of literary criticism and is a prodigious translator of poetry and prose from English including Philip Roth, Margaret Atwood, Ursula Le Guin, Umberto Eco, Seamus Heaney, Darek Walcott and Adrienne Rich among others.
Among other awards and merits, he received the Nike Award (2022), the Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis (2006), and the Bernard O’Connor Prize for translations of Irish poetry into Polish (2024).
