Loss to PIASA community
Halina Osysko passed away on Wednesday, November 9th, 2022 at the age of 93. A historian and educator, she had a passion for learning that was reflected by her commitment to integrating Poland’s historical and cultural legacy into the curriculum pf American schools.
This effort, which rested on Halina’s avid study of Polish history, culminated in the publication of the widely circulated bilingual Polish history text entitled “Readings in Polish History,” that she edited in collaboration with her husband, Edmund, in consultation with Prof. Leon Tadeusz Błaszczyk of the University of Warsaw. Edmund served as president of the New York metropolitan Polish diaspora schools as part of the CPSD.
Together, the Osyskos promoted a culture of self-respect for students and parents of Polish descent. They developed programs for high school in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania – contributing greatly to the Polish ethnic community in the United States.
Halina was also an active and valued member of the Polish Art and Science Institute and the Koszciuszko Foundation in New York City.
She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Edmund (92 years old), her daughter and son-in-law, Ewa and James Gruft, and their two children, Leandra and Monet.
A funeral mass for Halina Osysko will be held at St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr Church (101 E 7th Street) on December 10th, 2022 at 11 AM, followed by a reception.
