According to Metro, they are combining post-punk and psych with skill. “The Beatles sing Joy Division oversimplifies them but doesn’t misrepresent them”. According to The Guardian, “the band’s music blends off kilter melodies, dense instrumentation and lyrical explorations of the darkest side of the human condition”. The Times compares them to Sonic Youth, Radiohead and the Manchester scene in the 80s. According to Mojo, their “gripping and energetic record packs a serious punch”. KEXP highlights “ominous guitars, stern rhythms and haunting melodies” and The Quietus agrees. As Pitchfork describes, “Trupa Trupa are the rare dystopian post-punk band to embrace optimism andlevity as necessary survival mechanisms. They may not have the perfect prescription for a better world, but they welcome you to imagine one together”. Trupa Trupa are Grzegorz Kwiatkowski, Tomek Pawluczuk, Wojtek Juchniewicz and Rafal Wojczal. They made their first international appearance in 2015 with the album “Headache” published by a British label Blue Tapes and X-Ray Records. A year later they signed to French Ici d’ailleurs, to release a remastered version of “Headache” on vinyl. In 2017 the band recorded and put out “Jolly New Songs” published additionally on a Japanese label Moorworks. In 2019 Sub Pop released Trupa Trupa’s single “Dream About”. The same year the band was also featured on a cassette split with a Texan alternative legend The Suspirians, published by an American label Whited Sepulchre Records. In September 2019 the group published “Of the Sun” album. The release was a result of international cooperation of Glitterbeat Records (Europe), Lovitt Records (USA), Moorworks (Japan) and Antena Krzyku (Poland). In March 2020 the labels published the band’s EP “I’ll find”. The new album B FLAT A is out now! Newsletter Vol. 2, No. 2 April 2022

PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT Newsletter Vol. 2, No. 2 April 2022 I set my alarm early for February 24 as I prepared to embark on a long road trip from my home in Franklin, Tennessee, to a conference in Richmond, Virginia. After throwing a few last items together, I did a quick check of the news on my iPhone to see if anything had changed in Ukraine. Indeed, it had, horrifically so. A day earlier with war on the horizon, PIASA had endorsed a letter of support and solidarity from the Polish PEN Club to its Ukrainian counterpart. Two days later, PIASA issued its own statement in both English and Ukrainian to condemn in no uncertain terms Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine (see above). The Board of Directors then began to consider how best to assist Ukrainian refugees who had already crossed the border with Poland by the thousands. As the scale of the humanitarian crisis increased by the day, we settled on a $5,000 donation to UNICEF based on its long-time organizational experience in alleviating the suffering of children, which it now brought to Poland. Belarus had played host to the launching of Russia’s invasion from the north and, against a backdrop of recent tensions with Poland as the Lukashenko regime sought to push refugees from outside of Europe across the border, we also had to make some decisions about our planned conference in nearby Białystok. The relief from COVID allowed for some positive thinking and, after assessing how the city was managing to support 30,000 Ukrainian refugees at last count, we decided to move forward with the conference. Indeed, if there was ever a need for a conference whose main theme is the borderlands of east central Europe, it is now. At a time when Ukraine is fighting for its territorial integrity and very existence as an independent state, something Poles know only too well from their own history, PIASA’s conference in Białystok can be an expression of appreciation for the experiences and cultures of all peoples who have resided in this critical region of Europe. ― Robert Blobaum, PIASA President

The Polish Review presents a special issue: “Writing Polish in America”: The Case of Anna Frajlich

PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT The Polish Review presents a special issue: “Writing Polish in America”: The Case of Anna Frajlich The March 2022 issue of The Polish Review (vol. 67, no. 1), guest-edited by Ronald Meyer (Harriman Institute, Columbia University), is the first collection in English of essays about the work of poet Anna Frajlich. Frajlich fled Poland in 1969, making her home in New York City, where she taught at Columbia University for over three decades and became one of the foremost poets writing in the Polish emigration. Half of the essays in this special issue were contributed by scholars residing in the United States; half were first published in Poland and translated into English especially for this volume. Contributors examine Frajlich’s poetics, themes, and treatment of the concepts of space, time, and memory; analyze her experience of emigration and displacement; and explore the corporeal tropes associated with Frajlich’s treatment of the pain and trauma of exile. The issue presents the first publication in English of Frajlich’s “Israel Poems.” Contributors: Jaroslaw Anders, Ewa Bartos, Alice-Catherine Carls, Grażyna J. Kozaczka, Wojciech Ligęza, Ronald Meyer, Beata Morzyńska-Wrzosek, Ross Ufberg, Sławomir Jacek Żurek.
