PIASA News & Events about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT In memory of Maciej Patkowski It is with great sadness that we inform you that Maciej Patkowski, a writer, and long-time PIASA member, passed away on January 17 in Lake Ronkonkoma, Long Island. The author of many novels, stage plays and film scripts, he was a member of the Union of Polish Writers Abroad (based in London) the Polish Writers’ Association (based in Warsaw), and the recipient of many literary awards. He actively participated in the cultural and literary life of New York’s Polish community and co-organized many important events. He also played a key role in an exhibition dedicated to Jan Lechoń at PIASA’s headquarters on the 100th anniversary of the poet’s birth in 1999, the unveiling ceremony of the memorial plaque to Jan Lechoń in Doylestown on the 50th anniversary of the poet’s death in 2006, and special academic sessions during PIASA Annual Meetings. He also collaborated in various capacities with the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York, The Józef Piłsudski Institute in America and the Polish Museum in Chicago. The Polish community in America and PIASA have lost not only a distinguished member, but also a devoted friend. PIASA News & Events about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT Loss to PIASA community Halina Osysko passed away on Wednesday, November 9th, 2022 at the age of 93. A historian and educator, she had a passion for learning that was reflected by her commitment to integrating Poland’s historical and cultural legacy into the curriculum pf American schools. This effort, which rested on Halina’s avid study of Polish history, culminated in the publication of the widely circulated bilingual Polish history text entitled “Readings in Polish History,” that she edited in collaboration with her husband, Edmund, in consultation with Prof. Leon Tadeusz Błaszczyk of the University of Warsaw. Edmund served as president of the New York metropolitan Polish diaspora schools as part of the CPSD. Together, the Osyskos promoted a culture of self-respect for students and parents of Polish descent. They developed programs for high school in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania – contributing greatly to the Polish ethnic community in the United States. Halina was also an active and valued member of the Polish Art and Science Institute and the Koszciuszko Foundation in New York City. She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Edmund (92 years old), her daughter and son-in-law, Ewa and James Gruft, and their two children, Leandra and Monet. A funeral mass for Halina Osysko will be held at St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr Church (101 E 7th Street) on December 10th, 2022 at 11 AM, followed by a reception. PIASA News & Events about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT Farewell to Dr. Wieczerzak It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of a distinguished PIASA member – Dr Joseph Wieczerzak, who has died at the age of 91. He is survived by his son Christopher Joseph Wieczerzak of Passaic NJ, and his daughter Barbra Margaret Reilly of Katonah, NY. Dr. Wieczerzak passionately supported (and contributed works to) PIASA promoting Polish arts, sciences and culture generally. And, during 17 years as editor-in-chief of the Polish Review, he was instrumental in chronicling important chapters in our shared history, with a particular emphasis on Polish immigration to the United States during the 19th century. Dr. Wieczerzak seamlessly gave of himself to enrich the lives of his family, the Polish American community and New York City. He enjoyed, and earned, a life well-lived. May he rest in peace, and may we all profit from his example. PIASA Latest News about us MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCES AWARDS PUBLICATIONS CONTACT People PIASA remembers In memory of Dr. Zbigniew Darzynkiewicz We regret to inform our members that Dr. Zbigniew Darzynkiewicz passed away after a long illness on February 28, 2021. He was a world-renowned biologist, specializing in fundamental cancer research, was associated with New York Medical College, Valhalla, NY, served as a distinguished professor at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and Cornell University, and was a Foreign Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. Dr. Darzynkiewicz also authored over 800 scientific articles and many books, was an editor of several prominent journals, served as the President of international medical societies and earned a plethora of honors and awards, including The Casimir Funk Natural Sciences Award from PIASA in 2014. His ongoing, deep commitment to the Polish American community took many forms, including the key role he played in establishing the Collegium of Eminent Scientists of Polish Origin and Ancestry and many years of service as a PIASA Board Member.Always warm and positive, Dr. Darzynkiewicz helped and supported all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will be honored by all.Dr. Darzynkiewicz is survived by his wife, Elisabeth Darzynkiewicz, M.D., two sons, Richard and Robert, and grandchildren. In memory of Rachel Brenner It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Professor Rachel Feldhay Brenner, a member of the PIASA Board of Directors from 2018 until February 4, 2021, the day of her death in Madison, Wisconsin. Born in Zabrze in 1946, Rachel earned advanced degrees in Israel and Canada before joining in 1992 the faculty of the Department of Hebrew and Semitic Studies at the University of Wisconsin where she had just been selected as the inaugural Temkin Professor in Hebrew language and literature. Professor Brenner specialized on the Holocaust in Hebrew, Canadian and, over the last decade, Polish literatures, the subject of her last two highly acclaimed books published by Northwestern University Press: The Ethics of Witnessing: The Holocaust in Polish Writers’ Diaries from Warsaw, 1939-1945 (2014) and Polish Literature and the Holocaust: Eyewitness Testimonies, 1942-1947 (2019). Rachel presented her research for these books at successive PIASA conferences in the United States and Poland, collegial settings where she found receptive audiences and where she established many new friendships. Beyond her academic achievements, Rachel is remembered as a teacher devoted to her students and as an inspirational mentor to a generation of young scholars. As a member of the PIASA board, Professor Brenner eagerly volunteered her valuable service for the greater benefit of the Institute, most recently in conference planning and coordination. Rachel Brenner’s legacy will live on in her award-winning scholarship and especially in the memory of those of us who had the good fortune to know her. Photo source: www.polin.pl In memory of Dr. Waclaw Szybalski An internationally known authority on molecular biology, genetics and microbiology, Professor Szybalski earned his Ph.D. at the Gdansk Institute of Technology in Poland and, after moving to the US was a Professor of Oncology in the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research. His many contributions to medical research include Dr. Szybalski’s studies on mutagenesis and genomics. He was also among the first to formulate the concept of multi-drug antibiotic therapy. PIASA honored these accomplishments, awarding Dr. Szybalski the Casimir Funk Natural Sciences Award. He made the world a better place. May we all, in our own way, strive to do the same.
